Roughly one out of every 10 women you meet has endured severe, life-impacting pain due to endometriosis. According to data from the World Health Organization, the chronic disease can start at a woman’s first menstrual period and continue through menopause, with no cure available besides treatment to prevent and relieve her symptoms. Sadly, healthcare providers often dismiss endometriosis pain as menstrual pain, which results in many years of suffering before most women receive an accurate diagnosis.
Orlando-area entrepreneur Jessica King is on a mission to transform discussions about endometriosis by making it easier for women to receive diagnosis and treatment, ultimately improving their quality of life. Her biotechnology startup, Flowintell, is developing an at-home, non-invasive diagnostic test that uses menstrual blood to help women more quickly and cost-effectively determine whether they have endometriosis. Flowintell aims to make its first 60 tests available to customers by 2026.
Ecosystem Wins
An honoree of American Inno’s 35 Companies to Watch and Orlando Inno’s Startups to Watch in 2024, Flowintell models the startup success possible in The Corridor’s regional innovation ecosystem. The firm is a client of the UCF Business Incubation Program and has benefitted from membership in the Cenfluence Life Sciences Cluster, as well as StarterStudio and the Rally Social Enterprise Accelerator.
With help from mentors in these programs, King has successfully secured funding from local pitch competitions hosted by the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) and the Rollins College Crummer Graduate School of Business. She also won a prize from the Startup Runway Foundation, a Georgia-based nonprofit that supports underrepresented founders.
Furthermore, King is a graduate and leader of the region’s higher education institutions. Along with her biotechnology degree from Harvard University, King holds five degrees from the University of Central Florida in physics, chemistry, materials science and history. She is an adjunct professor, with teaching and committee roles at Seminole State College and Valencia College.
