What is the quantum computer stuff everyone talks about?
February 27th @ 6:00 pm - 7:45 pm
This months presentation will be “What is the quantum computer stuff everyone talks about?” by Len Bass.
Quantum computing is the latest buzzword in the computing industry. The question comes up: what is different about quantum computing and what will it allow me to do that I can’t do with classical computers? Quantum computers are based on a different hardware model than classical computers. A bit in a classical computer is either 0 or 1 with no ambiguity. A bit in a quantum computer (a qubit) is 0 with some probability and 1 with some other probability. This property of qubits allows much more efficient computation for some problems than is possible with classical computers. It also introduces difficulties in programming these devices. This talk will explore how one programs such computers and what are the possibilities and limitations of the hardware model. There will be no physics in the talk and no mathematics so it should be accessible to any software engineer. This is your opportunity to get a gentle introduction to the topic.
Len Bass has been in the computer business for 55 years. He is a prolific author having written eight books and over 100 articles. His books on software architecture are the standards in the field. He has also written books on DevOps and user interface software. His interest in quantum computers is recent.
